Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown sits on the York River just east of Yorktown's historic village, and the closest off-base housing is in Yorktown itself (about 2 miles, 10 minutes) and in Gloucester Point across the Coleman Bridge (about 5 miles, 10 minutes). Grafton is about 15 minutes away, and Seaford, Tabb, Lee Hall and Denbigh about 20. The training center has no local Housing Officer, so Coast Guard housing questions go to Base Portsmouth, and Coast Guard members can also apply for the Navy's privatized housing at nearby Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Coast Guard members draw BAH from the same DoD rate tables as the other services, and the training center's ZIP, 23690, is in Military Housing Area VA297, Hampton/Newport News, for 2026. Adam Triplett, the Virginia Peninsula Association of REALTORS® #1 individual agent every year since 2018, has closed 111 sales of homes with Yorktown addresses and 29 in Gloucester County (Adam's closed-sales record, 2006 through July 2026).

What is Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown?

Training Center Yorktown's stated mission is to "Forge Today's Force to Execute Tomorrow's Mission." It does that through resident, non-resident and exportable training, assessment and standardization programs, doctrine support and engagement with international, interagency and local partners (TRACEN Yorktown). The center falls under the Coast Guard's Force Readiness Command.

Its A-School support office provides pay and personnel support to approximately 1,500 "A" school students a year, in the BM, DC, EM, IS, GM, MK, MST and PS schools, and the training center says it advances more students to petty officer third class than all other Coast Guard training centers combined (TRACEN Yorktown administrative support).

It is a separate installation from the Navy's weapons station: TRACEN is east of the village on the York River, while NWS Yorktown's Gate 3 is about 7 miles west on Longfellow Road, roughly 15 to 20 minutes away. The Administration, SPO, ID card and household goods offices are on the first deck of Steuben Hall; the front desk is (757) 856-2140, and the center is also a DEERS/RAPIDS ID card site by appointment.

Reporting to TRACEN Yorktown: students and permanent party

"A" school students

From the training center's administrative support page, as of October 2026:

  • Report to the Security Office with your original orders in hand.
  • Travel and household goods entitlements depend on your orders type (PCS, TEMDU or TAD); COMDTINST 4600.15 covers "A" schools shorter than 20 weeks.
  • Students are entitled to a 400-pound shipment of household goods to and from "A" school, and there is no storage at the training center, so the page encourages government-procured storage for the rest.
  • "A" school students receive Enlisted BAS at the discounted meal rate and get a meal card on reporting.
  • Questions about entitlements go to the "A" School SPO at (757) 856-2140.

Students with a spouse or children who are thinking about renting locally should confirm how their orders treat housing before signing a lease.

Permanent party

  • Check in with Administration in Steuben Hall on reporting; you will be added to unit rosters and assigned a duty section.
  • For household goods coming out of storage in transit, call JPPSO-NE at (781) 377-7611. Storage in transit is limited to 180 days at government expense.
  • The training center does not have a local Housing Officer. For government leased housing, the center points members to Coast Guard Base Portsmouth (the page says ISC Portsmouth; the Coast Guard's housing office list names Base Portsmouth).

Coast Guard housing resources for Yorktown

  • Base Portsmouth. The Coast Guard's Housing Management Section supports 12 Area Housing Authorities, including Base Portsmouth, the office the training center points to. VA home loans for Coast Guard members

Federal law defines the "Armed Forces" to include the Coast Guard (38 U.S.C. § 101(10)), and VA's service requirements apply the same way (VA eligibility):

  • Active duty: at least 90 continuous days of service.
  • Veterans who served after August 2, 1990: generally 24 continuous months, or the full period (at least 90 days) you were ordered to active duty.
  • Reserve: 90 days of non-training active-duty service, or 6 creditable years in the Selected Reserve.

Active-duty members request a Certificate of Eligibility with a statement of service signed by a commander, adjutant or personnel officer. VA-backed purchase loans need no down payment when the price does not exceed the appraised value and carry no PMI, but you must live in the home. As of October 2026 the funding fee on a first-use purchase is 2.15% with less than 5% down, 1.5% with 5% down and 1.25% with 10% down; after first use it is 3.3% with less than 5% down. Members receiving VA disability compensation and active-duty Purple Heart recipients are among those exempt. VA loans are also assumable, which matters when you sell on orders; the military relocation hub covers assumptions and entitlement.

Schools near TRACEN Yorktown

York County School Division serves more than 13,000 students in 19 schools, including four high schools (Bruton, Grafton, Tabb and York); see York County school assignment. Published data for any school is on Virginia's School Quality Profiles.

Buying, renting and selling on a Yorktown tour

Compare your VA297 BAH against the full monthly cost of a house, including taxes, insurance, HOA dues and flood insurance where it applies; look up any address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. If you keep a home with a VA loan when you leave, part of your entitlement stays in use.

When orders come, Adam's process has three steps: assess the timeline from your report date, coordinate the punch list and contractors so nothing waits on you being in town, then sell and close remotely from your next duty station. His record near the training center, 2006 through July 2026: 111 homes with Yorktown addresses (40 since 2020), 9 in Seaford, 11 in Poquoson, 29 in Gloucester County and 198 in Newport News. See selling on PCS orders without being in town, the sold record and about Adam.
