How school assignment works in York County, Virginia

In York County, the street address sets the school. There are four middle and high school zones (Bruton, Grafton, Tabb, York) and 10 elementary zones; confirm any address in the county's online map before you buy.

The short answer

In York County, Virginia, the home's street address decides the school. The York County School Division (YCSD) splits the county into four middle and high school zones named for its high schools: Bruton, Grafton, Tabb and York. Elementary assignment uses a separate set of 10 zones. The quickest way to confirm all three schools for a specific address is York County's online mapping service at maps.yorkcounty.gov, which lists the assigned elementary, middle and high school for the parcel.

Two cautions. YCSD says online zone information is informational only and the official assignment is confirmed at registration. And a Yorktown, Seaford or Williamsburg mailing address doesn't tell you which school division serves a home; the locality line does. Everything below is as of October 2026.

How to look up the schools for a York County address

  1. Open York County's mapping service at maps.yorkcounty.gov and search the street address. YCSD's Find Your School page explains that the school information is on the General tab: scroll the panel on the right until you reach "School District."
  2. For context, download the county's PDF zone maps from the School District Maps page: one for the 10 elementary zones and one for the four middle and high school zones. Both are dated July 1, 2024.
  3. If the address doesn't come up, check the locality. The home may be in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, James City County or the City of Williamsburg, each with its own school division.
  4. Treat the school fields in a listing as a starting point; they can be out of date. YCSD takes zoning questions at 757-898-0300.

York County's four high school zones

Each zone pairs one middle school with one high school, per the division's middle and high school district map (produced July 1, 2024). The area descriptions are a plain-language reading of that map; zone lines follow streets and parcels, so check the exact address.

TabbTabb HighTabb MiddleVictory Boulevard and Yorktown Road, Calthrop Neck Road, Carys Chapel Road, Big Bethel Road north of Hampton Highway, and the Langley housing area beside Langley Air Force BaseLangley housing area

Zone names aren't neighborhood names. Seaford has its own elementary school but falls in the York zone for middle and high school, and homes just north of the Grafton High/Middle campus on Route 17 are in the York zone.

Elementary schools: 10 zones drawn separately

YCSD's 10 elementary schools are Bethel Manor, Coventry, Dare, Grafton Bethel, Magruder, Mt. Vernon, Seaford, Tabb, Waller Mill and Yorktown. The elementary district map draws their zones separately from the middle and high school zones, so look up all three levels.

Programs that draw from the whole division

Several YCSD programs take students from outside the host school's zone. Per the division's specialty programs page, as of October 2026:

The Governor's School is regional: juniors and seniors from seven divisions spend about 3.25 hours of the school day there (New Horizons). YCSD also runs York River Academy, a charter high school on the Yorktown Middle School campus for selected students in grades 9-12, and an Early College program with Virginia Peninsula Community College for eligible seniors.

Out-of-zone requests and non-resident tuition

YCSD accepts out-of-zone and non-resident applications from February 1 to June 1 for the following school year. Approval depends on capacity and program availability. High school students who move to an out-of-zone school are ineligible for Virginia High School League athletic and scholastic activities for 365 consecutive calendar days, except rising freshmen who transfer under the non-resident policy (enrollment page).

Students who live outside York County pay tuition. As of October 2026, the enrollment page lists $7,399 for a student included in the state's average daily membership (ADM) count and $14,949 for a student who isn't counted because they enroll on or after April 1, 2026. Children of full-time YCSD employees aren't charged.

To register, YCSD asks for two proofs of residence from different lists, such as a utility statement plus a mortgage statement, lease, property tax bill or close of escrow verification. The close-of-escrow option helps buyers registering right after settlement.

Why the county line matters more than the mailing address

York County stretches 27 miles from Williamsburg to Hampton and is bordered by James City County and the cities of Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton and Poquoson (York County). Postal city names don't follow those lines. Bruton High School's own address is 185 East Rochambeau Drive, Williamsburg, and Queens Lake Middle School's is 124 West Queens Drive, Williamsburg, yet both are York County schools. Each neighboring locality runs a separate school division with its own lookup:

Two neighbors are redrawing lines: WJCC's School Board is scheduled to act on new zones on October 20, 2026, for 2027-28, and Newport News Public Schools plans a redistricting recommendation in January 2027 for possible use in 2027-28. For homes in the city of Poquoson, see the Poquoson area guide.

Rules for military families

State law adds enrollment protections for military-connected students:

  • Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children (Va. Code § 22.1-360). Schools enroll a student provisionally with unofficial records, allow 30 days for required immunizations, initially honor course placements such as honors and AP, and accept a special power of attorney for guardianship.
  • Enrolling before you arrive (Va. Code § 22.1-3). A child may enroll in the division of intended residence with the service member's orders or a command letter, and may register remotely. Proof of a permanent address there is due within 120 days, or tuition may be charged.
  • Military housing (Va. Code § 22.1-7.2). A division with a military installation or military housing must have a policy letting a student who lives there request any school in the division if space is available.

On the July 2024 zone map, Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown is in the York zone, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex are in the Bruton/Queens Lake zone, and the Langley housing area is in the Tabb zone. For a home off the installation, the home's address, not the duty station, sets the assignment. See the guides to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown and Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Where to find school data

Virginia publishes School Quality Profiles for every division and school at schoolquality.virginia.gov. This guide doesn't rank schools; it explains assignment so you can find the schools for a specific home and read the state's data yourself.

Buying or selling in York County with schools in mind

Buyers should confirm the locality, run the address through the county's lookup for all three levels, save the result with the date, and confirm at registration. Sellers should list the assigned schools exactly as the official lookup shows them and point buyers to the tool rather than promising an assignment.

FAQ

Questions readers ask

How do I find out which schools serve a York County, Virginia address?

Search the address in York County's mapping service at maps.yorkcounty.gov. On the General tab, scroll the right-hand panel to School District to see the assigned elementary, middle and high school. The county also posts PDF zone maps dated July 1, 2024. What high schools are in York County School Division?

York County School Division has four zoned high schools: Bruton, Grafton, Tabb and York. Each pairs with one middle school: Bruton with Queens Lake Middle, Grafton with Grafton Middle, Tabb with Tabb Middle, and York with Yorktown Middle. The division also operates York River Academy, a charter high school on the Yorktown Middle School campus. Elementary assignment uses 10 separate zones.

Does a Williamsburg or Yorktown mailing address mean a home is in York County schools?

No. The school division follows the locality, not the postal city. Some homes with Williamsburg addresses are in York County and attend York County schools; Bruton High School's own address is on East Rochambeau Drive in Williamsburg. Other Williamsburg addresses are in James City County or the City of Williamsburg and attend WJCC schools. Confirm the locality on the tax record, then run the official lookup.

Can my child attend a York County school outside our attendance zone?

York County School Division accepts out-of-zone and non-resident applications from February 1 to June 1 for the next school year. Approval depends on capacity and program availability. Out-of-zone high school students, except rising freshmen transferring under the non-resident policy, are ineligible for Virginia High School League activities for 365 days. For the elementary and middle school magnets, families provide transportation.

Which York County school zone is Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown in?

On York County's middle and high school zone map dated July 1, 2024, Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown is in the York zone, served by Yorktown Middle and York High. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex are in the Bruton/Queens Lake zone, and the Langley housing area is in the Tabb zone. For a home off the installation, the home's own address sets the schools.

Can military families register for York County schools before they arrive?

Yes. Virginia Code section 22.1-3 lets a child enroll in the division of intended residence with the service member's orders or a command letter, and allows remote registration. Proof of a permanent address in the division is due within 120 days or tuition may be charged. York County School Division's enrollment page confirms military-connected students may register remotely or in person.
