FAQ

Questions about living near Joint Base Langley-Eustis

What are the best areas to live near Langley AFB?

It depends on the commute and the kind of house you want. By drive time, downtown Hampton, Wythe, Phoebus and Coliseum Central are about 10 minutes from the LaSalle Gate; Fox Hill, Buckroe, Poquoson and southeastern Newport News are 15 to 20; Tabb and Kiln Creek about 20. Hampton and Poquoson include many waterfront and low-lying lots where flood insurance matters, while Kiln Creek is a planned community with an HOA.

What areas are closest to Fort Eustis?

Lee Hall, at the north end of Newport News, is about 2 miles and 5 minutes from the Fort Eustis Boulevard entrance. Denbigh is about 10 minutes, Kiln Creek and Grafton about 15, and Yorktown, Tabb and Seaford about 20. Williamsburg and James City County are roughly 25 minutes up I-64. These are approximate off-peak estimates; rush hour on I-64 and Jefferson Avenue adds time.

How long is the drive from Yorktown to Langley AFB?

From Yorktown's historic village to Langley's LaSalle Gate is about 18 miles, roughly 35 minutes off-peak. From Tabb, in lower York County, it is about 10 miles and 20 minutes, and from Grafton about 12 miles and 25 minutes. Langley sits on the Hampton side of the Peninsula, so York County addresses closer to Hampton Highway and Route 17 in Tabb have the shorter drives.

Where should we live if one of us works at Langley and the other at Fort Eustis?

The two gates are roughly 16 to 18 miles apart, about 25 minutes off-peak. Kiln Creek, Tabb, Hidenwood and City Center at Oyster Point each sit within about 20 minutes of both. City Center and Hidenwood are in Newport News Public Schools and Tabb is York County School Division. Kiln Creek is split: its Newport News villages attend Newport News schools and its York County villages attend York County's Grafton-zone schools. Both installations share the same VA297 BAH rate, so pay does not change with the choice.

What is the 2026 BAH at Langley AFB and Fort Eustis?

Both installations are in Military Housing Area VA297, Hampton/Newport News. Monthly 2026 rates include $2,082 with dependents and $1,599 without for E-1 to E-4, $2,274 and $1,779 for E-5, $2,439 and $2,088 for E-7, $2,475 and $2,361 for O-3, and $2,835 and $2,427 for O-4. Confirm your exact rate on the DoD BAH calculator, since BAH depends on grade and dependency status.

How do I get on the waitlist for Langley family housing?

Apply to Langley Family Housing, which Hunt Military Communities manages, with proof of your assignment date (orders, RIP or memo listing all dependents) and a month-end LES. Once Hunt approves the application, you are placed on a waitlist for homes you qualify for. After you accept a home, you complete a referral and briefing with the Military Housing Office. Hunt lists no up-front rent or deposits for active-duty members.

How long is the wait for on-post housing at Fort Eustis?

There is no fixed wait. Fort Eustis Family Homes, operated with Balfour Beatty, has 881 homes, and the wait depends on availability, grade and the number of bedrooms needed; one-story homes are very limited. Apply within 30 days of signing in so the application is backdated to the date you left your last duty station, and contact the Housing Services Office before signing any off-post lease.

Which school division serves the neighborhoods near Langley AFB?

Most of the areas closest to Langley, including downtown, Wythe, Phoebus, Buckroe and Fox Hill, are in Hampton City Schools. Poquoson has its own four-school division, Tabb and the rest of York County are York County School Division, and southeastern Newport News is Newport News Public Schools.
